Nostalgia

Youth rang like mourning doves attuned to the breaking of dawn

Fresh dew scattered on the lawn

A cool breeze in the air as I waited for school and then summer

Cartoons blaring in the background as I delayed slumber

The ringing of the bell as we all ran free from classes

Swimming in the pool, lemonade in our glasses

Cousins coming over to play until the sun had well descended

We laughed and giggled until one day it couldn’t be mended

I woke late from dreams in my grandparents bed,

Just to find that the snow had well shed.

Butterflies fluttered in my stomach the night before,

Today was my birthday. I beamed as I went out of the door.

My siblings and I gathered around grandma’s christmas tree,

Soon I felt myself being carried in the arms of someone I couldn’t see.

Now I sit, tears welled in my eyes

For a feeling of something that had passed me by.

She Was Born a Dreamer

She was born a dreamer.

Just a girl who spent her days imagining nothing into something. She'd stare at the granite walls of the shower, pointing out faces she could see in the tiles, like pictures in the clouds.

She would imagine her life in the future, wondering what kind of life she would lead.

Would she be a movie star like all of those pretty ladies she'd see on the screen? No, she was not as pretty as them, nor fit to be seen.

Could she be a pilot, flying high in the sky like Amelia Earhart once did? Well, she was afraid of heights and had only been on an airplane once before.

How about a writer--a famous poet like Sylvia Plath? Alas, no one reads poetry these days and Sylvia Plath is dead. Plus, everybody can be an author nowadays. She doesn't have what it takes to make it big.

Yes, she was quite the dreamer, her head always high above the clouds.

A girl who wanted to do everything, but knew she could do nothing.

A girl who loved a world that didn't seem to love her back.

But oh, did she dream that it did.

July Forever

you remind me of august

a time that is pleasant.

but july cannot last forever,

the month slowly migrates to september -

and then everything changes.

the weather is either hotter or colder

and my days be filled with everything other than you.

Not in New York

Some nights i lay in bed with no sleep in mind

Because my head is clouded with every “what if” imaginable

What if that night never happened

And that shit never happened?

& the words that were said were never spoken.

But now i take medicine to help me through the night,

Because i am afraid i will wake up at 4am again and

read the words that have somehow consumed my everyday life.

and my dreams have lead me to a world that is unobtainable.

A dream that consists of a different world

A world where we’re next to each other.

And you’re driving my ‘55 convertible on the outskirts of new york

And we’re playing only the songs we can agree on.

Because our tastes are so similar yet so different at the same time.

And i’ll have my hair straightened just as you like it and my fake eyelashes on.

And you’ll have your curly, unruly hair flying through the wind as you sing to me

And i’ll be writing all our adventures & goals down as we face our difficulties together.

And you’ll be swimming among the millions of people in new york

Trying to make it just like everyone else.

But we are okay, because we have each other, we can never feel lonely

In a city of people just like us, trying to make a living.

But then i wake up and i realize we are not together

We are not in new york

And i am not that poet that everyone knows.

And i am lonely in a city of steel, far away from you - in every way possible.
